This large abacus is used to demonstrate maths concepts such as counting, more than / less than, maths vocabulary, addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.

The colourful wooden beads slide smoothly across the wooden rods.

Each row contains ten colour beads making counting in the decimal system simple.

The sturdy wooden frame enables easy resting in solid surfaces for class demonstrations.

Includes a teacher/parent manual in Afrikaans and English.

Note: In order to prevent mirror-image confusion, the teacher should ensure that all learners face the same direction and are not seated in a circular formation when demonstrating the use of the abacus.

• Directionality – the direction in which / from which an object moves or is moved.
• Fine Motor Co-ordination – the coordinated movements of the small muscles and joints of the body, e.g. fingers, wrists and hands.

• Intellectual Development – the ability to form concepts, to understand, to judge, to solve problems, to make decisions, to reason and to recognise.
• Number concept – an understanding of the basic meaning of numbers.
• Spatial Relationships – an awareness of one’s position in relation to objects or objects in relation to other objects.
• Visual Foreground / Background Perception – this is the ability to focus attention on a particular visual item, placing it in the foreground, while allowing everything else to fade into the background.
• Vocabulary and Knowledgebase – The vocabulary that learners use and their ‘knowledge base’ that they refer to while telling or talking. It helps to broaden a learner’s vocabulary and knowledge base.
